In a statement released on Jan. 3, IndyPL announced the departure of Nichelle M. Hayes, director of the Center for Black Literature and Culture (CBLC) and former interim CEO.
“Nichelle M. Hayes has been an asset to the Indianapolis Public Library and the community as a whole for many years. During a difficult transitional period for the library, Ms. Hayes stepped up and skillfully filled the role of Interim CEO. Ms. Hayes and the Library have decided to mutually part ways. The Library wishes her the best of luck in her future endeavors and appreciates her many years of dedication to the organization.”
Hayes was the director of CBLC since 2017. She was appointed as the interim CEO of the library in 2022.

Members of the community backed Hayes in the library’s search for a permanent CEO, attributing their support of her to her tenure with the library and her strong connections to the community.

Despite ongoing protests from the community and library union members, in a private conference room, the IndyPL Board of Trustees appointed Gregory Hill as permanent CEO in April 2023. Hayes continued her employment at the library following Hill’s appointment.
In a statement released via social media, Hayes said:
“As I chart a new path, I am proud of the work and partnerships formed during my career at the library. I am excited to bring my passion, skills and abilities to the next chapter of my adventure.”
