Families with a relative whose death was caused by COVID-19 may be eligible for reimbursement of funeral costs. Families can receive up to $9,000 per COVID-related funeral or a total of $35,000 if multiple family members died from COVID. To be eligible, the death must have occurred in the United States or a United States territory and COVID-19 must be listed as the cause of death on the death certificate.
The applicant must be a United States citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien who paid funeral expenses after Jan. 20, 2020. However, the deceased isn’t required to be a U.S. citizens or non-citizen national.
To make the application process easier, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends having documents such as the death certificate, receipts for funeral expenses, funeral home contracts and proof of funds from other sources used such as burial insurance or financial assistance from government agencies on hand.
