The 98th consecutive homecoming celebration was held recently at the Roberts Settlement Chapel Church in Hamilton County. Founded in 1835, free Blacks and mixed-race farmers migrated from North Carolina and Virginia to escape the deteriorating conditions in the South. Roberts was the surname of some of the settlers.
Every year for 98 years, various families have gathered to celebrate their history. The two-day festival includes horseback rides, fireworks, a golf tournament, family potluck dinner and a worship service. The current president of the family group is LaVella Hyter. This year, there were more than 70 members in attendance.
