Todd Rokita, the Republican incumbent, was declared the winner of the Indiana Attorney General’s race after taking an early lead against Democratic candidate Destiny Wells.

With 88% of the votes being tallied, Rokita received 59.2% of the votes, just over 1.5 million, while Wells received 40.8% of the votes, just over 1 million in total.

Rokita was first elected Attorney General in 2021. While in office, he called for higher education institutes to combat antisemitism, developed an Indiana Parents’ Bill of Rights and launched an online portal where individuals can upload “potentially inappropriate materials” that students are reportedly exposed to in the classroom.

While in office, Rokita received multiple disciplinary complaints for misconduct, including a public reprimand by the Indiana Supreme Court regarding comments made on Fox News surrounding his office’s investigation into an Indianapolis doctor.

For his reelection campaign, Rokita ran on a platform of Hoosier safety and supporting a strong economy. Rokita is anti-abortion, in favor of the Second Amendment and anti-federal overreach. He also sought to support Hoosier jobs and stand up against “woke ideology,” according to his official campaign website

The Indiana Attorney General is responsible for the state and its agencies, officials and employees in state and federal courts and protecting public interests. As Attorney General, Rokita’s priorities are to use the position to stop unwanted robocalls and stand up for consumers.

The race garnered attention from abortion activists, citing that the race could alter the future of a near-total abortion ban, which Rokita supports. The candidates debated in October and had heated exchanges about resumes and immigration.

Democrats faced a significant fundraising disadvantage in the race, raising $1 million compared to Rokita’s $1.7 million.

Despite the results not being called, Rokita claimed victory in an acceptance speech Monday night at a GOP watch party. Wells reportedly called Rokita to concede victory.

“I’m grateful to have earned the votes and, more importantly, the trust of so many Hoosiers tonight,” Rokita said in his speech. “I am proud to tell you, my fellow Republicans, my fellow Hoosiers, my fellow family, that I did not run a negative campaign.”
