The spirit of giving and camaraderie shone brightly at the third annual Blocking Cancer dinner held on Friday, July 21. This uplifting event, hosted by none other than the Indianapolis Coltsā formidable All-Pro offensive lineman, Quenton Nelson, aimed to support the V Foundation for Cancer Research ā a leading charity dedicated to pioneering cancer research. The night proved to be a resounding success, raising an impressive $700,000, with a generous $250,000 donation from Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Established in 2021, the Blocking Cancer initiative by Nelson has been a beacon of hope in the quest for game-changing cancer research through the V Foundation. The annual dinner has served as the centerpiece fundraiser, bringing together athletes, supporters and advocates in the fight against cancer.
This year, however, Nelson spearheaded an exciting new venture, adding an unexpected twist to the fundraising efforts ā Nelson’s Celebrity Softball Game at Victory Field. The game not only raised the spirits of the players and fans alike but also managed to deepen the sense of unity and solidarity among the Colts players before the start of the upcoming training camp.
In awe of the enthusiastic participation of his teammates in the exhibition softball game, Nelson expressed his gratitude, acknowledging that they could have been anywhere else, yet they chose to join hands for this worthy cause. “They could be back in their hometowns right now. For them to get here a week before camp and play in this game, it means a lot,” Nelson said.
Cornerback Kenny Moore and linebacker Zaire Franklin perfectly captured the essence of the event with Moore stating, “To be together, to start off the camaraderie and a little competition,” and Franklin adding, “Gotta support the guys, support the teammates, and when Big Q calls, we answer.” The game became a fantastic prelude to the training camp, bringing the team closer but also emphasizing the importance of supporting one another off the field.
The fans, ever devoted and passionate, were thrilled to witness their favorite football stars step into a different arena and showcase their skills in softball.
The funds raised from this Saturday will be wholeheartedly directed towards groundbreaking cancer research dedicated to therapeutic resistance. Such research endeavors have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment and provide hope for countless patients and their loved ones.
Nelson’s unwavering dedication to the cause of cancer research and his passion for creating a positive impact in the community has made him a true inspiration, both on and off the football field. Through his Blocking Cancer initiative, he continues to demonstrate that sportsmanship transcends the game, playing a crucial role in bringing about positive change in the world.
