The Center for Justice and Exoneration Network at Purdue University Northwest (CJEN) and the Timmy Donald Wrongful Conviction Coalition (TDWCC) hosted the “A Cup of HumaniTEA: Conversation. Understanding. Partnership” event on Oct. 2 at Old National Bank in Indianapolis.

Held in recognition of Wrongful Conviction Day, the program featured exonerees Timmy Donald and James Kluppelberg, who shared their experiences of wrongful incarceration, exoneration and rebuilding their lives.

“Exoneration is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of another one,” Nicky Ali Jackson, CJEN executive director said. “After years or decades behind bars, exonerees return to a world that moved forward without them. They need housing, employment, transportation, health care, financial guidance, education, technology, relationships and, perhaps most importantly, people who understand that freedom does not automatically mean that life has been restored.”

Donald spent nearly 24 years incarcerated for crimes he did not commit before his exoneration. According to Jackson, his experience became a catalyst for work focused not only on wrongful conviction, but on the tremendous challenges exonerees face after release.

Rabia Chaudry, attorney, advocate, New York Times bestselling author and executive producer of the HBO documentary series “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” was a featured guest at the event.

“This is about bringing the national conversation home,” said Jackson. “Rabia Chaudry has helped millions of people understand wrongful conviction through advocacy, storytelling and investigative work. But here in Indiana, we have exonerees with their own stories, their own losses and their own experiences of rebuilding. Bringing those voices together is powerful.”

According to Jackson, the CJEN has four pillars: investigation, education, policy reform, and post-exoneration assistance.

CJEN addresses wrongful convictions and provides the knowledge, advocacy, investigation, education and reentry preparation. TDWCC provides support to help exonerees move forward with rebuilding a life in matters such as housing assistance, clothing, transportation and other basic necessities.

“Ultimately, one of the greatest hardships is that there is often no established safety net specifically designed for an innocent person coming home after a wrongful conviction. That is the gap we are trying to fill,” Jackson said.

She continued, “We believe that if someone has lost years of their life because they were wrongfully convicted, society should not simply say, ‘You’re free,’ and leave them to figure out the rest. Freedom should be the beginning of rebuilding, not the point at which the responsibility to help them ends.”
