Discover Sweet Jeanius’ sweet treats

Sweet treats on the streets

Rolling out in January of 2012, this on-the-go bakery didn’t let the frigid temperatures ruin its debut. Sweet Jeanius prides itself on delivering “sweet treats on the streets” to those who explore the city for homemade desserts. When 70-something Jean Burnett was on the hunt for a project to take on, she stumbled upon the food truck industry shortly after Indianapolis hosted the 2012 Super Bowl. There, she discovered the lack of “sweet trucks.” Today Jean puts the “Jean” in “Jeanius” as she makes all of her items from scratch.

“When I say made from scratch, I mean from scratch,” said Kim Burnett, Jean’s daughter. “We have conversations about our peach cobbler because it is so time intense. She cuts into the shortening and adds the flour and hand slices the peaches.”

Sweet Jeanius’ peach cobbler and bread pudding, are why customers arrive early and race into line. Recently there has been another specialty item soaring on the popularity list – the cupcake sundae.

“It is truly having your cake and your ice cream too,” adds Kim.

When ordering the cupcake sundae customers are able to choose a cupcake base similar to vanilla, chocolate or a red velvet cupcake and then their choice is piled high with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and a cherry.

How Sweet Jeanius is operated

Although the truck can be spotted at the city’s major events, these candied cupcakes and prized pastries are whipped up about 60 miles north from the homes of many Indy residents. Jean bakes all items in her Kokomo kitchen with the help of family who prep the items. This 1979 vehicle holds about three family members comfortably and lucky for those on duty, there aren’t any ovens or stoves firing to add more heat.

Big Ron’s Curbside Bistro

Specialty sandwiches, soups and salads

It may be hard to miss the fire red truck cruising down the streets of Indianapolis, but those who know the truck well, call this food on wheels establishment Big Ron’s. Customers can lay their eyes (and taste buds) on cherry wood smoked rib tips and fries, Pull Chicken Nachos topped with cheese, jalapeno onions, Sriracha BBQ, cilantro lime, sour cream and of course shredded chicken or any of their other specialty items. The lengthy line that often wraps around the truck may intimidate those ready to grab lunch on the go, but owner Ron Jones keeps the line moving with his new online ordering option. Since 2012 Big Ron’s has been serving up weekly specials like the veggie filled Chicken Salad Wrap or the Big Ron sandwich stuffed with pulled pork, ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, avocados and other flavorful ingredients to demand business at events such as Food Truck Fridays on Georgia Street, the Statehouse Market and the First Friday Food Truck Festival.

Track down Big Ron’s Curbside Bistro on Facebook and Twitter @BigRonsBistro or visit their website for the weekly schedule at bigronsbistro.com.
