NASHVILLE – Jury selection is scheduled to begin for a trial of long haul trucker Bruce Mendenhall in Nashville.

The Albion, Ill., man will be tried on charges that he tried to arrange the murders of five people after his arrest on murder charges. He faces charges of solicitation to commit first-degree murder in the trial beginning Monday.

Prosecutors say Mendenhall tried, from a jail cell, to hire the killings of two Nashville police detectives and three witnesses.

Mendenhall was arrested in June 2007 in the murder of a woman whose body was found at a Nashville truck stop. He later was charged with killing three other women in Lebanon, Tenn.; Indianapolis; and Birmingham, Ala.

Mendenhall has been held without bond since his arrest.

More details as they develop online and in Tuesday’s News Sentinle.
