More women infected with HIV

More by this author

Women are the fastest growing segment of Wisconsin’s population that are becoming infected with the HIV virus.

Although the number of new cases of HIV infection has stabilized over the past 10 years in Wisconsin, the number of infected women keeps growing.

Last year, 391 people contracted the virus. That’s down slightly from the average 400 people over the past decade. Twenty-one percent of new infections involve women. That compares with 16 percent in the 1990s and 6 percent in the 1980s.

Aids Resource Center of Wisconsin executive Christina Colon says they’re targeting women’s health fairs to get the word out about prevention.
