Indiana State Fair: Good food, Good laughs

More by this author

The dinging of games, the screams of people on rides, the smell of fried foods and warm summer nights. These are the makings of none other than the Indiana State Fair, which will be held August 1-17 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Many Hoosiers have had a great summer, but are eagerly anticipating the state fair. The state fair is where the whole family can have fun and eat good food. There are many standard favorites that will return this year along with new events to keep patrons coming back.

ā€œI am looking forward to spending time with my daughter at the fair, walking around winning prizes, and eating wonderful food like elephant ears and turkey legs,ā€ said local resident Christopher Barney.

This yearā€™s Indiana State Fair theme is ā€œA time to celebrate,ā€ honoring the grand reopening of the coliseum, which has been under renovation for the past 18 months.

The fair will feature rides such as the Ferris wheel, the log fume and Kiddie land. Ticket prices for rides and rules will remain the same.

This year, the fair will feature new events such as the Flipping Out extreme trampoline group, freestyle BMX stunt show and the K9 trick dog show.

For the first time since 1946 the fair will host the Indiana Beer & Wine Exhibition. The exhibition is located in the Grand Hall and will feature tasting and sales by the glass. All tastings will be ā€œwhile supplies lastā€ and patrons must be 21 years or older to enter.

As if all of these events werenā€™t enough to keep the family occupied for hours, there will also be the Shane Co. Coliseum series. The concert series features artist such as Lynard Skynard, Phillip Phillips, Pitbull and many others. Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, charge-by-phone or at the Indiana State Fair box office.

Although rides, prizes, and musical artist are fun, the food is what really brings people in. This year the fair will have standard food kiosks such as steak and potatoes, corndogs, turkey legs, and corn on the cobb.

For those with a sweet tooth and a stomach of steel, there will be the fried foods section featuring favorites such as fried Snickers, Oreoā€™s, Reeseā€™s and Twinkies. This years featured item, chosen through the signature food contest, is the ā€œFruit Twister Shake Up,ā€ a take on a lemon shake up but includes pineapples and strawberries.

ā€œEven though itā€™s not a fried food, the people still voted for it,ā€ said Andy Klotz public relations director for the Indiana State Fair Commission.

For patrons who love to see livestock there will also be the livestock bar which will feature horses, llamas, alpacas, beef cattle and sheep just to name a few.

In order to get the best bang for your buck the fair has ā€œ$2 Tuesday,ā€ where all food booths have a food item on sale for $2. Aug. 7 is state employee day, armed forces and Veterans day where all state employees and military personnel get in free with ID.
