INDIANAPOLIS – Butler University will welcome 958 freshmen when school begins Wednesday, Aug. 26, a class slightly larger than the enrollment target of 915.

Vice President for Enrollment Management Tom Weede cites the University’s commitment to making a Butler education as accessible as possible as one of the reasons for the strong class.

“We have been very cognizant of the financial challenges facing many families, thus we significantly increased the availability of financial aid and made only moderate increases in tuition, room and board,” explained Weede. “I believe this helped students and families see Butler as a partner and the best college choice for them. We are very excited to welcome these new students to Butler.”

The students making up Butler’s class of 2013 boast strong high school academic achievements and an average GPA of 3.74 (on a 4.0 scale). Eight are National Merit Scholars (up from 4 last year); one student is a National Achievement Scholar. Fifty-six of them were valedictorians; 19 were salutatorians. Twenty-nine are Lilly Scholars.

The freshman class comes to Butler from 32 states and a number of different countries. The student traveling the farthest resides in Matraville, Australia, more than 9,290 miles from campus. One hundred and two of the freshmen are multicultural or international.

The class also includes 104 legacy students [descendants of alumni]. This is Butler’s largest collection of legacy students, up from 101 the previous year.

Some other interesting statistics about this year’s class are:

· 444 were in the National Honor Society; 210 were involved with student government or student council; 105 were class officers.

· 632 volunteered in their community; 191 were involved in their church youth group; 66 participated in a mission trip.

· 189 students were athletic team captains; 164 were multiple letter recipients; 22 were state champions.

· 301 students were in their high school band or a member of the choir; 124 were cast in a play or musical; 73 were first-chair musicians.

One hundred fifty-one members of the freshman class are from the Metro Chicago area. Other high concentration areas include: 26 from Fort Wayne; 21 from Cincinnati; 12 from South Bend; and 10 from Lexington, Ky. An additional 87 students come from Indianapolis, 10 from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). Butler’s number of IPS students has increased steadily in recent years.

As in years past, pre-pharmacy remains a popular area of study for this year’s class. Other areas of interest include business, exploratory studies, biology, education, chemistry and psychology. Thirteen percent of the class is currently undecided about a major.

Overall, the University has seen the number of students applying to Butler rise 30 percent since 2004. In academic year 2008-2009, 6,241 students applied to Butler.
