(CNN) — A 21-year-old man from Uzbekistan was indicted Tuesday and charged with threatening to kill President Barack Obama.
Authorities say Ulugbek Kodirov was in the U.S. illegally after his student visa was revoked and had obtained a machine gun and a grenade.
Kodirov was charged with four counts of threatening the president and others weapons charges, the Justice Department said Tuesday.
He was arrested on July 13 in a motel in Leeds, Ala., after he obtained the machine gun from an undercover agent.
The suspect came to the United States in June 2009 and remained in the country after his student visa was revoked, the Justice Department said. His student visa was revoked in April 2010 because he had not stayed in school.
He faces maximum five years in prison for every count of threatening the president and maximum 10 years in prison for the weapons charges, the Justice Department said.
Several agencies, including the FBI and the Secret Service, worked on the case.
“Federal and local law enforcement effectively coordinated to investigate a threat, which resulted in the arrest of Kodirov who was charged by the grand jury this afternoon with repeatedly threatening to kill the president of the United States and with possessing grenades and an M15 machine gun,” U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance said.
