BOSTON (AP) — A black Harvard University police officer says that the department passed him over for promotions because of his race and that superiors routinely made racist remarks about blacks and Latinos.
Officer George Pierce’s recently filed lawsuit in U.S. District Court says that the veteran patrolman applied for sergeant positions only to be passed over for less-qualified, non-black employees.
The complaint also alleges that supervisory officers made racial comments about blacks dominating sports and a slur describing a Latino police officer.
The suit seeks unspecified damages. Harvard declined to comment on the pending litigation.
A panel that looked at allegations of campus police racial profiling in 2009 recommended better training and outreach to students and faculty.
