Seal, Clarkson, Foster to perform anthem

Music superstars and Grammy Award winners David Foster, Seal and Kelly Clarkson will perform the National Anthem during pre-race ceremonies for the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Seal and Clarkson will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a duet, accompanied by Foster on piano. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces will stand at attention beside Foster’s grand piano during the performance.

It’s the first duet of the anthem accompanied by a piano in the 100-year history of the race.

The 500-Mile Race starts at noon.

Janet Jackson tickets on sale for State Fair concert

Tickets for Janet Jackson’s Indiana State Fair concert on Aug. 17 are now on sale.

The legendary entertainer, who grew up in Gary, is visiting just 35 cities around the world with her “Number Ones: Up Close and Personal” Tour on which she will perform nothing but her chart-topping hits.

Her extensive catalog of No. 1 singles includes “Nasty,” “That’s the Way Love Goes,” “Together Again,” “Rhythm Nation,” “All for You” and many more.

Tickets are $88, $68 and $48 and include State Fair admission. They can be purchased at the State Fairgrounds Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations. They can also be purchased through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000 or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.

Eagle Creek Park fishing derby

The Eagle Creek Park Foundation and Indy Parks will kick off summer by hosting the 10th annual Kids’ Fishing Derby on June 4 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Approximately 400 children ages 4-14 are expected to unite on the banks of Eagle Creek Park’s coffer dam, located at the first right south of the 71st Street gate, to participate in one of the nation’s largest fishing derbies, all for free.

Pre-registration is required by June 1 at 5 p.m., and space is limited to the first 400 participants to sign up. No park or event admission fee will be charged to pre-registered participants. Registration forms are available at the Eagle Creek Park Office or online at www.eaglecreekpark.org. The rain backup date is set for June 5.

Red carpet gala for The Tarkington opening

The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel will celebrate The Tarkington Theater’s grand opening on Aug. 6.

The opening night concert in the 500-seat theater will feature artistic director Michael Feinstein performing Frank Sinatra hits. Feinstein will be joined by Tony Award-winning Broadway and television star David Hyde Pierce.

“We are planning a festive, star-studded event,” said Steven B. Libman, president and CEO at the Center for the Performing Arts. “We are looking forward to completing the Center for the Performing Arts campus. With The Tarkington opening, we envision an exciting new era for the arts in Central Indiana.”

Woodruff Place Flea Market

The annual Woodruff Place Flea Market celebrates its 36th year on June 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every year, the Woodruff Place Flea Market promises two days of treasure-hunting and treasure-finding, combined with food, fun, and the best people-watching this side of the State Fair.

The market has grown from neighbors selling stuff in their yards to 80 acres and 200 yards filled with vendors from inside and outside the neighborhood. The whole Cross Drive will be devoted to food and drink for visitors who need a bite to eat. There will be entertainment to keep shoppers happy while they rest their feet for a moment.

Woodruff Place is located 18 blocks east of downtown Indianapolis, between Michigan and 10th streets.

IU Health Sports performance camps

At the Indiana University Health Sports Performance summer camps, young athletes can select from six speed-and-agility camps held in June and July around the Indianapolis area. The day camps – with groupings for athletes ages 7 through 10, and 11 through 14 – are designed to help kids develop explosive power through increased vertical jump, strength, flexibility and overall speed.

Led by nationally certified strength and conditioning coaches, the camps are designed to help participants boost their overall fitness and decrease their risk of injury.

Four-day camps are all daily sessions from 9 a.m. to noon.

Their locations include:

ā€¢ June 6-9, Shelbourne Field, 3451 W. 126th St., Carmel.

ā€¢ June 13-16, Avon Middle School South, 7199 E. U.S. Highway 36, Avon.

ā€¢ June 20-23, Badger Field, 5459 E. Main St., Carmel.

ā€¢ July 11-14, Hamilton Southeastern High School, 13910 E. 126th, Fishers.

All camps cost $89.

For four-week camps, campers pay week-by-week and may attend as many weeks as they like.

They are:

ā€¢ July 11-Aug. 5, IU Health Sports Performance, 1402 Chase Court, Carmel. Daily sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $99 a week.

Concerts on Canal begin May 26

The Indiana Historical Society’s Concerts on the Canal will begin May 26.

The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, home of the IHS, is located at 450 W. Ohio St., along the picturesque, historic Central Canal.

The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will play big band jazz, the Great American Songbook and movie favorites from 6-8 p.m.
