“Making the Dream a Reality” event planned

Several groups will host the seventh annual “Making the Dream a Reality” program on Wednesday, April 4 in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 17th and Broadway. The event will commemorate the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on that day 44 years ago.

The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, the Indiana Christian Leadership Conference, Indiana Black Expo, and the City of Indianapolis’ Indy Parks and Recreation Department will host the event which is scheduled from 5 to6:15 p.m.

Precisely at 6:01 p.m., the time of the assassination, the moment will be observed with a special recognition.

The theme of this year’s event is “Making the Dream a Reality: Peace and Community Responsibility the Pathway to a More Perfect Union.” Community leaders will address the issues of peace and non-violence. There also will be dramatizations and musical presentations.

 During the event, six women will be honored with the Trailblazer Award for their achievements and contributions to their communities and the state of Indiana.

          Those women include:

          •        Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, U.S. District Court-Southern District of Indiana, the first African-American woman to become a federal judge in Indiana.

          •        Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman, first woman to be elected lieutenant governor.

          •        Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, first African-American woman to become mayor of an Indiana city.

          •        Indianapolis-Marion County City-County Council President Maggie Lewis, first African-American and first woman to be chosen council president in           Marion County.

          •        Judge Marilyn Moores, Marion Superior Court – Juvenile Division, the first woman judge to head the Marion County Juvenile Division.

          •        Tamika Catchings, Indiana Fever professional basketball player, honored for her exemplary community service.
