IPS sports roundup: Jan. 21-26

More by this author

The girls have wrapped up their regular seasons and are heading into sectional play. Though it wasn’t an encouraging year overall, there were a couple strong finishes that can hopefully cary over to the postseason. Basically the opposite is true with the boys. Although they aren’t getting ready for sectionals quite yet, it just wasn’t a great week.

Girls Basketball

Crispus Attucks (6-13)

            • Jan. 22 — Crispus Attucks 48, Manual 46

            • Jan. 23 — Covenant Christian 46, Crispus Attucks 26

            • Jan. 25 — Crispus Attucks, 51, Herron 45

This Week:

            • Feb. 1 — vs. Cardinal Ritter, 6 p.m. (sectional at Bishop Chatard)

After losing their first nine games of the season, the Tigers closed the year 6-4. Cardinal Ritter (15-8) is a tough draw. The Raiders beat Attucks in the sectional championship last year.

Arsenal Tech (0-20)

            • Jan. 23 — Kokomo 58, Arsenal Tech 21

            • Jan. 26 — Tindley 52, Arsenal Tech 21

This Week:

            • Jan. 30 — vs. Cathedral, 6 p.m. (sectional at Cathedral)

The old postseason saying is everyone is 0-0, that it’s a new season. Tech better hope so. Cathedral (9-14) knocked Tech around, 61-16, when they two met back in November.

George Washington (4-15)

            • Jan. 22 — Riverside 60, George Washington 44

            • Jan. 24 — Sheridan 73, George Washington 27

            • Jan. 25 — Park Tudor 68, George Washington 30

            • Jan. 26 — George Washington 34, Providence Cristo Rey 32

This Week:

            • Jan. 29 — vs. Scecina, 7:30 p.m. (sectional at Speedway)

Four games in one week to close out the regular season is a heavy load, but Washington needed that fourth game to get its first win since Jan. 16. Washington lost to Scecina, 77-18, on Dec. 16.

Shortridge (14-8)

            • Jan. 22 — Shortridge 45, Herron 33

            • Jan. 24 — Shortridge 76, Irvington Prep 10

            • Jan. 25 — Shortridge 39, Liberty Christian 33

This Week:

            • Feb. 1 — vs. George Washington/Scecina (sectional at Speedway)

That’s four straight wins to close out the regular season, and the Blue Devils have a sectional bye. No doubt they’ll be pulling for Washington to beat Scecina, but if it’s Scecina they end up playing, the Crusaders won 51-30 on Nov. 5.

Boys Basketball

Crispus Attucks (12-5)

            • Jan. 21 — Crispus Attucks 59, Howe 51 (city tournament)

            • Jan. 23 — Cathedral 78, Crispus Attucks 48 (city tournament championship)

            • Jan. 26 — Ben Davis 72, Crispus Attucks 63

This Week:

            • Jan. 31 — vs. Brebeuf, 7:30 p.m.

This is the first time this season Attucks has lost two games in a row, but if you had to pick a spot on the schedule for that to happen, it probably would’ve been against Cathedral and Ben Davis.

Arsenal Tech (4-11)

            • Jan. 25 — Muncie Central 68, Arsenal Tech 57

            • Jan. 26 — Brebeuf 64, Arsenal Tech 57

This Week:

            • Jan. 31 — vs. Kokomo, 7:30 p.m.

Tech continues to bounce up and down this season. After winning four of their previous six, the Titans have dropped three in a row.

George Washington (7-7)

            • Jan. 25 — Park Tudor 56, George Washington 44

This Week:

            • Jan. 29 — vs. Traders Point Christian, 7:30 p.m.

After two straight losses, the good news for Washington is its next two games seem to be tilted in its favor, followed by good tests against Guerin Catholic and Attucks.

Shortridge (5-10)

            • Jan. 21 — Shortridge 71, Bethesda Christian 43

            • Jan. 23 — Speedway 65, Shortridge 61

            • Jan. 26 — Covenant Christian 67, Shortridge 37

This Week:

            • Feb. 1 — at Indianapolis Metro, 7:30 p.m.

Anyone who writes about or even just pays attention to sports has an instinct to assign trends. I fall into that trap all the time, but it’s almost impossible to do here with Shortridge. So, thanks?
