Golf outing to benefit CLD

More by this author

In an effort to support the mission of the Center for Leadership and Development (CLD) and its work to empower African-American youth to realize their potential and achieve success, 3’D Trophy is hosting its 8th annual golf outing.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. April 26 at Gray Eagle Golf Course in Fishers. Attendees will enjoy a fun and friendly golf competition including lunch, dinner and an awards presentation.

CLD began in 1977 as a non-profit community leadership development program for minorities in business in Central Indiana.

According to the organization, its purpose is to expose African-American youth to vibrant programs and experiences that emphasize and promote character development, educational excellence, leadership effectiveness, community service and career achievement.

“The CLD purpose and mission has been dear to our endeavors since its inception when it was introduced to my father over 30 years ago,” David Mayes, president of 3’D Trophy. “As a father of two young boys and girls I see the need on a daily basis, not just for my kids, but for other kids like them within the community.”

Henry Bundles Jr., a distinguished and celebrated Indianapolis business and community leader, introduced the program to Mayes’ father. Bundles was the CLD founder and president until his retirement in 2000.

In 2004, the Mayes family presented CLD with the idea of the golf outing as a means to raise funds.

Through the friendship of Bundles and David Mayes Sr., owner of 3’D Trophy, the organization continues to support CLD’s efforts. David Mayes Jr., is a facilitator for CLD’s youth programs.

CLD served 2,491 students in 2010. Reports show their Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Project session boasts a 92 percent rate of retention. The purpose of the course is for youths to find their niche through career exploration. CLD hosts 16 programs and initiatives throughout the year including Precious Miss Program, Project Mr., and College Prep.

Ronald Brown, manager of fund development at CLD, says community support and funds will enhance the future of Indianapolis.

“This golf outing will help hundreds of youth throughout Central Indiana at a nominal cost to their families. The end result is youth participating in CLD programs develop their self-esteem and self-worth,” Brown said. “They learn to be integral members of our community and therefore have the opportunity and responsibility to help improve themselves and their community.”
