Avec Moi: honesty to go

More by this author

Maybe it’s just me, but I can typically tell when a plate of food set in front of me has been made with love. To think that every ingredient, every sprinkle of seasoning and every step of the process was done all for my enjoyment.

It’s easier to find food made with love at my grandmother’s house, but in a restaurant, not so much. Until now.

Meet Kris. This mother of three boys enjoys serving good-tasting, good-for-you food to her family, but was having a hard time finding that type of care when she needed something to go. She decided to take the bull by the horns and opened Avec Moi.

Yes, it has a fancy name, but the food is made from fresh, local and organic ingredients. Avec Moi (which is French for “with me”) is a “delicious alternative to dinner out.”

I had been eagerly anticipating this restaurant for months and was pleasantly surprised at how honest the restaurant and food was.

See, at Avec Moi, there are no tables, no fancy setup and certainly no pushy signs or waiters urging you to try the special of the day. There are only dishes that Kris has prepared where customers can grab what they want, pay and be out the door eating in no time.

Avec Moi keeps you coming back for more. Not only is the food delicious and flavorful, but the menu continuously changes.

One week the menu may consist of items such as baked whole wheat penne with asparagus and extra lean ground turkey, while another may offer spaghetti squash with sautĆ©ed spinach and pine nuts. On any given week, customers can find real ingredients that come together to make flavorful, contemporary food that comes in “normal portions.”

The day I visited Avec Moi, the display case was bursting with bold flavors.

There was the Mexican Caesar Salad ($4); wheat berry salad with goat cheese ($4.50); homemade salsa and tortilla chips ($2.50); summer kielbasa succotash ($5); chicken stuffed poblanos with gluten-free corn bread ($8.75); and paella with soy chorizo and edamame ($6). There were also sugar cookies ($1.50), brownies ($2.50) and Mexican wedding cakes ($2.50 for three) available for after your meal.

I ordered Mern’s chicken enchiladas ($6.75) with a side of fiesta rice ($3.75). I took it back to the Recorder office, heated it in our oven and had hot food in 15 minutes.

My lunch was healthy, filling and was just the right portion to get me through the work day. It was also one of those meals that you feel good about choosing because you know that it isn’t laden with salt, grease or mystery ingredients.

The bad news is that next week’s menu won’t have those enchiladas, but it doesn’t matter, because I know I will be able to choose a wholesome, hearty item that will be just as delicious.

Avec Moi takes pre-packaged, fast food to a whole new level. Order your lunch online, pick it up and go. Or stop by the Broad Ripple restaurant, take a quick look at what’s in the case and have dinner on the table in a jiffy.

People can also order dishes for a dinner party, engagement party or baby shower with food that can be presented in your own dishes. Don’t be sneaky, let your guests know that Avec Moi is responsible for their culinary enjoyment.

The concept of Avec Moi may be slightly unconventional, but with food this good and healthy, unconventional should be standard.
