INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana’s largest school district says it will lay off hundreds of employees to balance its budget.

WRTV-TV and The Indianapolis Star report Indianapolis Public Schools notified employees last week during spring break that they will begin cutting 271 teaching positions and 37 nonteaching positions to trim its $20 million budget deficit.

The cuts will include 200 elementary teachers, 40 middle and high school level teachers and 21 special education instructors. A district spokeswoman says most of the affected teachers have less than five years of teaching experience.

District officials say some administrators may be laid off too.

The district’s school board will vote on the proposed cuts in May.
