When it came time to treat my friend Kelley to a birthday dinner, I couldn’t come up with anywhere fancy to take her so I let her choose. Since I’ve known her, she’s always ordered the simplest dishes on the menu. Chicken fingers and fries, no matter the restaurant. So when she raved about a Cajun pasta bowl at Granite City, I knew this was a place I had to try.
We nestled into the 96th Street location close to Meridian Street on a breezy evening.
Although Kelley and I already agreed to what we were going to order, the Cajun Pasta, I couldn’t help but look over the menu anyway. The appetizers section featured Vodka Mussels, Idaho Nachos and Asian Glazed Shrimp.
Along with salads, soups and four types of steak were rib, chicken and pork chop dishes. While other entrees seemed interesting, especially the Grilled Chicken and Asparagus Linguini with garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, oregano, onions and basil, I had to try the pasta I agreed on.
Within 15 minutes our two huge bowls of Cajun Pasta arrived. The apricot colored penne pasta accompanied the chicken, Andouille sausage, tomatoes, onions and bell peppers very well and I couldn’t wait to taste my dish. The bowl of creamy goodness was a spicy, sweet mix. Honestly, I continued eating well after I was full.
Jessica, another Recorder staff writer, always finds my restaurant reviews humorous because I always have left over food due to not being able to finish it all. Yes, this is another one of those occasions.
My excuse: pasta is very filling and adding two types of meat to the list doesn’t make me feel confident I am going to finish the entire meal, but that’s OK.
In addition to food, they also have a full bar available. Although I ordered water, I did try some of Kelley’s PAMA Pomegranate Mojito, which made me think twice about my beverage because it was fantastic.
I usually only order alcoholic beverages on occasion but the mojito is one I will order all for myself next time I visit. If you haven’t tried Granite City go and try one of their burgers, seafood dishes, soups or at the very least their PAMA Pomegranate Mojito.
