Sparks of positivity at Ruth’s Café

More by this author

If you knew my personality, you’d know I love quotes and positive messages. They brighten up not only my day but the day of others. What does quotes and food have to do with one another? They both combine a well-constructed atmosphere with a sense of joy.

As I walked into Ruth’s Café on East 86th Street I was met with powerful and positive messages plastered on the walls, host station and the large floor-to-ceiling, three-dimensional chalk board. These short messages added a bit of a boost to my day, even before I checked out the menu.

Searching for a quick place to sit, I found a petite two-top table in between a family and two friends reminiscing about the old days.

Now to the food. Menu specials also known as the “Daily Scramble” were also hand written on the enormous chalkboard but I was given a menu as well. The menu accompanied salads, a variety of grilled cheeses and even a dish called Ruth’s Crab which is crab cake with lettuce, tomato, avocado, havarti and pico de gallo on a toasted focaccia bun.

All of the other items sounded great but breakfast was on my mind. Customers have the choice of building their own egg dish or omelet while choosing from 16 different veggies counting asparagus, mushrooms and zucchini; 10 different cheeses; and six types of meat including smoked salmon. It really seemed as if the possibilities were endless.

Coupled with the egg dishes were an assortment of other breakfast favorites like cheesecake pancakes, Belgian waffles, French toast and quiche.

Since I can be a plain Jane sometimes, I decided to stick with the “Old School” dish comprised of two eggs, choice of applewood bacon, country ham or home-made sausage patties, bread and homemade jelly. Choosing the applewood bacon and English muffin was the perfect choice. My food was delicious and the homemade jelly was the best I’ve had in a while. To me, this was real jelly and couldn’t compare to the “mystery jelly” sold at traditional grocers.

Everything about this place was full of personal touches. From the Terrier dog-like salt and pepper shakers on the tables to the ceiling panels drawn with cooking utensils, you’re destined to find something out of the ordinary. In fact, after many request, the Keystone Shoppes location decided to share their décor with customers. From the sayings on the wall, to coffee cups and scented greetings cards, customers can now welcome these one-of-a-kind pieces into their homes.

Also, if you’re in the mood for a quick bite, Ruth’s has a Grab and Go Café where hungry customers can choose from lattes, smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit and Ruth’s signature favorite lunch sandwiches and salads.

If you’ve been on the hunt for a traditional breakfast café, Ruth’s may become one of your favorites. Its wooden and custom-made furniture and antique-like feel is quite refreshing when being surrounded by positivity. It’s a great way to begin your day.
