Long’s Bakery still a staple in Indianapolis

More by this author

Looking for a sweet treat? Despite the fact that the sign telling customers “the treats are fresh from the oven” no longer lights up, the people who crowd into the tiny bakery and create lines that sometimes extend outside the doors prove that Long’s Bakery is still an Indianapolis favorite.

Long’s is not exactly the fancy, upscale and highly advertised bakery that critics usually go crazy over. Despite its modest looks, however, Long’s Bakery is hard to miss.

People from all over Indianapolis and beyond make the trip to Long’s, most likely in a delicious donut trance. From the corner of North Tremont Street near 16th Street on the Westside of town, potential customers can smell the tasty treats being prepared inside, and see all of the customers’ cars lined up along what would otherwise be a not so busy street to purchase them.

Long’s Bakery has great prices to go along with the great taste. Many pastries cost less than 50 cents and a dozen of their famed yeast donuts costs less than three bucks.

From long johns and apple-cinnamon fry donuts to chocolate covered cake donuts, Long’s Bakery has something for everyone. In addition, Long’s is prepared to help out on special occasions. Do you have a child’s birthday party coming up? Long’s can make a specialty cake that sports their favorite cartoon character.

Long’s is a family bakery founded by Carl Long in 1955, and has been around for more than 50 years. All of the products at Long’s are baked daily from scratch, starting early in the morning and continuing to bake all day long. None of the products contain preservatives, and the bakery puts customer service first, staying open during most holidays when other bakeries are closed.

If that’s not enough to sway you, for the past three consecutive years The Indy Channel has awarded Long’s Bakery first place in their list of best bakeries in Indianapolis.

Trust me, you have not had a donut until you’ve had a warm yeast donut from this bakery. If you live in Indianapolis and have never made the trip to Long’s, you are missing out on something sweet.
