Confident Allen ready to compete

There are a number of players looking to distinguish themselves this year for the Indianapolis Colts.

Then there is Dwayne Allen. The talented and affable tight end who saw his 2013 campaign come to a halt after the season opener due to a serious hip injury, can only be described as chomping at the bit in terms of his desire to play.

“I am more than just ready,” said Allen in the locker room after the second preseason game against the New York Giants. “It is time to hit and be hit.”

Being medically cleared to play and finding one’s groove after returning from a long layoff are clearly two different things, and Allen appears to be on track in that department as well.

The third year pro out of Clemson continues to demonstrate the athleticism that has him listed as No. 1 on the depth chart at tight end, and sounds indeed like a player who is ready to make up for lost time with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

“I feel I am capable of doing everything I did before my injury, and having number twelve on your side is certainly a big advantage in that department,” he said.

While having to wait to get back on the field was frustrating, it clearly has given Allen even more incentive to build on a promising rookie season.

“I am prepared to do the things I do best to help this team win a championship,” added Allen before departing his locker for a healthy post game snack. “It just feels great to be back.”

Notes: Allen was not bashful when asked about his alma mater’s chances in the upcoming college football season, predicting the Tigers will be in the playoffs. Clemson is currently listed at No. 16 in the preseason polls.

The Colts continue their preseason campaign on Aug. 23 when Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints bring their high-octane passing game to Lucas Oil Stadium. There are a limited number of tickets available for the game which kicks off at 8 p.m. CBS will televise the contest and you can also listen to Bob Lamey’s radio call of the game in stereo on your FM dial at 97.1.
