Protecting your Mobile Devices from the Elements

More by this author

This Spring Break, whether you’re hitting the slopes or traveling to sunnier destinations, your mobile device is sure to be along for the fun! As you’re snapping pics and sharing your favorite moments, be mindful of the elements (sun, sand, water, and snow)… nothing dampers a vacation faster than a damaged mobile device. To help you keep your trusty hand-held companion safe and protected no matter what the weather conditions, Aio Wireless provides the following tips.

 1. Temperature

Going from one extreme temperature to another (hot to cold, or vice-versa) can impact your phone’s battery life. Try to keep your device at room temperature at all times:

  • While you’re lounging by the pool or beachside, store your device in a shaded area.
  • If your device overheats, allow the phone to cool down gradually. If you have access to a refrigerator, place it inside for 3-5 minutes.
  • Use headphones or Bluetooth in order to keep Smartphones properly sheltered while out in the cold.
  • While on the slopes, use warming and/or touchscreen-friendly gloves to handle a Smartphone in the cold.

 2. Physical Protection

  • Arm your device by investing in a case and a screen protector. There are lots of minerals whipping around in the wind; so, even if you don’t drop your device in the sand or snow, minerals can accumulate in/on your device.
  • If there appears to be sand/dust particles in the crevices of your working device, use a bulb syringe (not a can of compressed air) to blow them out.
  • For more protection, place your device in a Ziploc bag. However, be mindful when you bring it back inside to a cooler room, as moisture can build up in the bag and damage the device.

3. Keep it charged

Unfortunately, you may not always have access to electric outlets while on vacation; and there is nothing worse than having your phone power down when you’re in the midst of capturing that once-in-a-lifetime picture or using your navigation system to locate an address. Use the following simple tricks to protect your battery life:

  • Only allow your battery to partially discharge. A good rule of thumb is to recharge it when it reaches 50% of life.
  • Don’t allow your battery to reach a complete charge. Charge until battery life reaches 90-95%.
  • Let your battery discharge completely every 30 days.
  • Always bring a travel and/or back-up charger.
  • Consider a purchasing a phone case that not only protects your device, but will also charge your battery (not available for all devices).
