Recorder president makes history

Shannon Williams, president of the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, Indiana Minority Business Magazine and Georgia Minority Business Magazine, was recently elected to the Hoosier State Press Association board.

She is the first African-American to ever serve on the board. The Hoosier State Press Association, founded in 1933, is a trade association representing 175 daily and weekly paid circulation newspapers in Indiana.

Lynx Capital elects board and officers

Bill Mays, president of Mays Chemical Co., and Philip Roby, chief operating officer of the National Bank of Indianapolis, were elected to the top two positions on the board of the Lynx Capital Corp.

Mays was elected chairman of the board while Roby will continue on as president of the Lynx board.

The board also elected Thomas Grein of Eli Lilly and Co. as treasurer and Jean Wojtowicz of Cambridge Capital Management Corp. as secretary.

Four board members were re-elected to new terms. They include: Charles Garcia, Garcia Construction Group; David Kretschmer, WellPoint; Dobbie Smith, Perfect Impressions Printing Co.; and Steve Stitle of PNC Bank.

The remaining board includes Erik Miner, Regions Bank; Mike Newbold, Huntington National Bank; Mike Rechin, First Merchants Bank; Reagan Rick, M&I Bank; Willie Roper, IPL; Tom Skidmore, Indiana Economic Development Corp.; and J. Albert Smith, Chase Bank.

The board elections took place at the Lynx annual meeting.

Lynx Capital Corp. provides growth capital to minority owned businesses in Indiana. Since being established in 1991, Lynx has provided $13.4 million to 69 Indiana companies. Lynx looks for companies that have at least five employees, three years of operating history, and exciting prospects for growth. Lynx can provide $75,000 to $300,000 in loans to these businesses.

Business challenge

Area businesses that have overcome challenging situations with success are invited to enter the “How I Got My Business Out of Hot Water” Challenge. This is a short essay contest where business owners share a compelling story about how they got out of a challenging situation and made their business even stronger.

Reliable Water Services, a local provider of commercial water heaters, boilers and water softeners, along with the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce invite Indiana business owners to submit a 500-750 word essay at www.hotwater247.net.

Companies can share how handling a specific challenge helped them strengthen their business strategy. The site has contest rules and details.

“At a time when many companies are struggling to overcome financial and operational challenges, it’s those businesses who forge ahead with innovation and determination that prosper,” said Lynne Robinson, president of Reliable Water Services.

The grand prize winning entry will receive $2,500; second prize winner will receive a new iPad 2 or $500 cash; third prize winner will receive a Mini Netbook or $350 cash.

Deadline for entries is midnight on May 27. Winners will be announced on June 22 at Schmooza Palooza,the Indy Chamber’s largest party of the year and an energetic gathering for business professionals.
