Statewide coalition disappointed by passage of Indiana Public Question 1

A coalition of civil rights advocates, labor unions and grassroots community organizations expressed their disappointment with the passage of Public Question 1, a proposed constitutional amendment that appeared on today’s general election ballot in Indiana.

“While we are deeply disappointed by the passage of Public Question 1, our commitment to defending the constitutional rights of all Hoosiers remains unwavering,” said Melissa Gruver of Indiana Task FORCE. “This amendment threatens fundamental due process and places an unfair burden on working families and under-resourced communities across Indiana. Preserving the presumption of innocence and protecting our neighbors from unchecked government power remains critically important. This vote does not change how essential those protections are.”

More than 150,000 Hoosiers had a conversation about Public Question 1 by phone or at their doors, and the movement amassed more than 13,000 supporters who agreed to take action in their own communities.

The amendment drew criticism from across the political spectrum, including from progressive groups, conservative media commentators and Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith. Even Gov. Mike Braun, who signed the amendment, only asked Hoosiers to “consider” supporting it.

The organizations that pushed back against Public Question 1 now look to the 2027 legislative session to continue working to protect Hoosiers.

“Our movement doesn’t end with this election,” Gruver said. “As we look ahead to the 2027 legislative session, our organizations will remain vigilant in holding lawmakers accountable and fighting for policies that safeguard civil liberties, strengthen our communities, and ensure justice for every Hoosier. The work continues despite today’s outcome.”
