Leadership is rarely the work of one person. At Lampco Federal Credit Union, that philosophy has shaped the way John Upshaw approaches his role as Chief Financial Officer: build a strong team, create meaningful opportunities for members and keep the organization moving forward.
That leadership has earned Upshaw national recognition. He has been named a finalist for the 2026 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards in the Executive Leadership – C-Suite, $1 Billion and Below category.
The Luminaries Awards recognize credit union leaders and organizations making a meaningful impact across the industry. For Lampco, Upshaw’s recognition reflects not only his individual leadership, but the work of the employees, leadership team and Board of Directors who have helped move the credit union forward.
Under Upshaw’s leadership, Lampco has increased profitability by more than 300% and grown its net worth by more than 133%, while increasing its net worth ratio from below 7% to more than 9%. Lampco has also achieved profitability every year since Upshaw began serving as CFO, while successfully negotiating cost reductions across major expense categories.
Upshaw has also helped lead significant operational and technology improvements, including the implementation of Fiserv Portico, a new core financial system, and a payment platform conversion. During his tenure, Lampco has expanded technology offerings for members, including mobile deposit, account transfers and enhanced fraud and risk detection tools. The credit union also secured grant funding to fully support mobile app improvements.
“We are striving to be best in class in all categories for our members while maintaining a best-in-class quality of life for our employees and staff,” said John C. Upshaw, CPA, Chief Financial Officer of Lampco Federal Credit Union.
Migual Patterson, CEO of Lampco Federal Credit Union, described Upshaw’s leadership as central to the organization’s continued progress.
“John is the living embodiment of servant leadership. The recognition of the nomination reflects years of the constant pursuit of excellence while maintaining integrity and grace,” said Patterson.
With nearly 20 years of experience in corporate finance, asset valuation and market expansion, Upshaw brings a broad financial perspective to his work at Lampco. Prior to joining the credit union, his experience included managing General Motors’ $72 billion pension fund and developing growth strategies across international markets including Brazil, China, India and Africa. He holds an MBA from Purdue University’s Daniels School of Management, is a CPA and has completed Level 1 of the CFA exam.
Beyond his work at Lampco, Upshaw remains active in organizations focused on economic development, financial leadership and community impact. His service includes leadership with Indiana Black Expo and the Indiana CPA Society, among other community and professional organizations.
The 2026 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards winners will be announced and honored November 5 in Orlando. For more information about the 2026 Luminaries Awards, visit Credit Union Times.
