Former state Rep. Luke Messer says he’ll challenge incumbent Rep. Dan Burton for the Republican nomination for Indiana’s 5th District congressional seat next year.
Messer, who served in the Legislature from 2003 to 2006, announced his bid in Shelbyville on Friday. Hamilton County businessman Brose McVey has previously said that he’s challenging Burton in next year’s GOP primary.
Messer says Washington needs new ideas and fresh perspectives to move the nation forward, and that jobs created in small businesses are the key to an economic recovery.
Messer is currently an Indianapolis attorney, and once was executive director of the Indiana Republican Party.
Burton has said he will seek a 15th term in Congress.
