As football season goes into full gear, many fans are waiting to see what will come from professional and college teams.
However, high school football oftentimes get overlooked as an exciting option for those who love the game that traces its history to 1869. Local fans can anticipate plenty of memorable moments from high school football, with the season officially beginning Aug. 23 with the Horseshoe Classic, which will feature Cathedral going against Ben Davis, then Terre Haute North taking on Castle at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Here are highlights of what can be expected from a sampling of some of the high school programs in Marion County this season:
Arlington ā The Knights had a 0-9 season last year they would probably rather forget, but local enthusiasts are not counting them out. This season the team has been rebuilt from the ground up with more than half of its players being new.
Ben Davis ā After getting close to the playoffs last year, the Giants, who finished 8-2 in Class 6A last year, is looking forward to going further this season with a stronger defense.
Broad Ripple ā Finishing 8-4 in Class 2A during their last run, the Rockets are pinning their hopes on returning quarterback C.J. Shiitu, who has had among the areaās best passing and rushing records.
Cathedral ā The Irish have been a powerhouse in recent years, winning the last three Class 4A state championships, and the team is moving up a class this season. With leadership by quarterback Collin Barthel, wide receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Zach Saum, the Irish are expected to still be a force to be reckoned with.
Lawrence Central ā The Bears are prepared to make every effort to have a repeat of their perfect 15-0 season last year with new coach Jed Richman, and an elite squad that includes wide receiver Kenny Jones, running back Mark Wilson and linebackers Brandon Lee and Quintaz Wright.
North Central ā After a disappointing 4-8 closing last season in Class 6A, the Panthers are looking to turn their fortunes around with a stronger offense, anchored by returning quarterback Michael Loggan and running back Milton McClain.
Pike – As last yearās Sectional 5 champions in Class 6A, the Red Devils (9-4 last season) are aiming even higher by using their speed and strength with star quarterback Brent Lyles and running back Taylor Sanders.
Tech – Junior running back James Gilbert is expected to take The Titans far into the Sectional 7 tournament following a respectable 6-4 showing in the sectional during their previous season under coach Emil Ekiyor.
