Indiana Fever stalwart Tamika Catchings has yet to play this season, but is still making an impact with her teammates as she continues to work on getting healthy and back on the court.
Recently she took the time to answer some questions after a practice at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and wasĀ candid about her health, the quest for the playoffs, and playing for her country.
Recorder: Obviously sitting out and watching your teammates play has to be frustrating. What have you tried to do this season as a leader and a mentor to the younger players?
It is a huge responsibility to support them and I take it very seriously. At the same time it allows my voice to be heard. I challenge them all the time to be the best they can possibly be.
Watching you practice, it appears you are getting close to playing again. Will you be cautious upon your return, or will you be the hustling player you have always been?
I intend to play hard, as it is the only way I know. It will take some time, but I am confident I can play at a high level when I return. I honestly cannot wait to get back out there and compete. This team can be successful in the playoffs, and I really want to be part of that.
You have accomplished so much in your storied career. What is left for you from a basketball perspective and how do you achieve that?
Being a leader for this team is my first objective. Winning another WNBA championship and then playing again in the Olympics in 2016. If I can do all that, I would be extremely happy.
Another Olympic appearance would be a grind, both mentally and physically. Four years later, are you up for all that?
I do not look at it as a grind. Playing for your country is indeed an honor. Look at our military personnel. They are the ones up against a grind and give us so much more every day.
You continue to distinguish yourself off the floor with your foundation. Why has that always been so important to you?
It is very important that I provide a positive environment for those less fortunate. By helping families grow stronger, we can position these kids to become future leaders and better parents for their children.
Lin Dunn will retire from coaching at the conclusion of the season. Talk about her influence in your life, as well as your career.
Coach Dunn is so passionate about what she does and I love that. Her commitment to her players both on and off the court has made me a better person and not just a better basketball player.
