February marks African-American history month as an annual celebration of achievements recognizing the dominant positions by African- Americans in history.
There’s an abundant amount of activities listed below for everyone.
This is an excellent opportunity for families of all ages and ethnicities to increase their knowledge about African- American history.
For Black families, it is a chance to put forth the effort to remember the hardships our ancestors endured on their quest to freedom and equality.
• Art & Soul The annual celebration offers events throughout the month of February at the Indianapolis Arts Garden.
• Sankofa Black Heritage Festival Feb. 7 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. This festival will showcase African American art including demonstrations through art and culture with dancing and drumming.
• Children’s Museum “The Power of Children: Making a Difference” exhibit is about Ruby Bridges an African-American first grade student who conserved through being the first black student who was integrated into a white school.
• Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. will be on Hilbert Circle Theatre to host a free concert for Black History Month.
• Indiana Historical Society Black history challenge through Feb. 28. Kids have the opportunity to test their knowledge by answering 10 questions. Then, they can take the online test for the chance to win a family fun pack provided by Downtown Indianapolis, Inc. with a variety of prizes and an ultimate grand prize. • Madame Walker presents Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. & Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. Theatrical performances honoring Madame C.J. Walker and Levi Coffin’s life.
• The Paramount Theatre in Anderson,Ind. on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. will honor the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II.
• Target Family Night Feb. 7 from 4 p.m.- 8 p.m. free admission for a Black History month special emphasizing on African- American achievements in history, art, music, and science
• Meet the Artists 2015 at Central Library until Mar. 28 Meet Artist XXVII, there will be a display of locally prominent African- American artists. Lovers of art get the opportunity to meet and enjoy free cultural entertainment including a fashion show, workshops, and African drumming gospel music during the Feb. 14 from 5- 10 p.m.
• Throwback Thursday Cinema Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. tickets are $5 Madame Walker Theatre series of documentaries and films on The Black List. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders sheds light on being Black in America talking to African- American pop-culture icons Serena Williams, Sean Combs, Chris Rock, and Colin Powell.
