Ind. utility seeks deal for Lake Monroe water

More by this author

Indianapolis Power & Light is seeking permission to draw up to 23 million gallons of water a day from southern Indiana’s Lake Monroe.

The utility’s request is a contingency plan in case it needs extra water to cool its generating plant near Petersburg.

State Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Monique Riggs says if the contract is approved, IPL could request the release of water from the lake, which would follow the White River to the plant in Pike County.

The contract would not allow the water be used for other purposes, such as drinking.

The DNR will have a public hearing on the request on May 21 at the Monroe County Courthouse.
