Indiana State Police say 53 people were arrested outside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, most for public intoxication or disorderly conduct.
Sgt. Anthony D. Emery says that’s a typical tally for race weekend because many fans roam the streets outside the track and drink.
Emery says paramedics responded to a few cases of dehydrated race fans Sunday but in the heat wasn’t a big problem overall. The temperature reached 86 degrees by mid-afternoon, with about 40 percent relative humidity.
Speedway spokesman Ron Green says some fans were treated in the infield medical center for heat-related conditions, but he didn’t have a precise number. Misting stations were set up under the grandstands to help fans stay cool.
