States of Incarceration: ‘13th’ film screening and panel discussion

More by this author

All are invited to join IUPUI Museum Studies and The Circle City (IN) Chapter of The Links Incorporated on Saturday, March 18, for a public screening of the 2017 Academy Award-nominated documentary “13th,” directed by Ava DuVernay.

Centered on race in the United States criminal justice system, the film is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which outlawed slavery (unless as punishment for a crime). DuVernay’s documentary opens with the idea that 25 percent of the people in the world who are incarcerated are incarcerated in the U.S. and argues that slavery is being effectively perpetuated in the U.S. through mass incarceration.

The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion facilitated by Dr. Ivan Douglas Hicks with experts Dr. James Kilgore (featured in the documentary), Dr. Terri Jett, Dr. James Dix III and Marshawn Wolley. The public is encouraged and invited to take part in this public conversation about the impact of mass incarceration on Indianapolis communities. This event is the first in a series of programs in conjunction with the exhibit “States of Incarceration,” which will be showcased at the Central Library, April 13-May 14.

The screening will begin at 2 p.m., and the panel discussion will take place at 4 p.m. in the Central Library auditorium, located at 40 E. St. Clair St. Admission is free, but registration is encouraged. RSVP at 13thscreeningindy.eventbrite.com.
