Close out the decade with a bang

More by this author

Take a second to think about what you were doing in 2010 when this decade began.

In school? Going through a difficult time? Just starting your life? Hopefully things are better — or still going well — 10 years later.

The end of the decade should be good reason to get out on Dec. 31 and do something in celebration. And you don’t even have to be happy about the 2010s; it would be perfectly fine to use it as an opportunity to bring on the next decade.

If you’re someone who usually stays in, maybe this is a good time to get out and try something new. Not everything on New Year’s Eve is loud partying and drinking.

Below isn’t an exhaustive list of your New Year’s Eve options, but it should be a good starting place.

Countdown to Noon

• When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 31

• Where: The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 N. Meridian St.

• Cost: included with cost of admission

It can be difficult to find family-friendly New Year’s Eve events where the kids are invited and you don’t have to worry about staying out late into the night. Instead of counting down to midnight, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has a countdown to noon and 1 p.m. Both countdowns will have confetti and feature music from Grammy-nominated Zak Morgan. Attendees can also learn how to say ā€œhappy new yearā€ in different languages and create a time capsule for 2019.

New Year’s Eve at the Vogue

• When: 9 p.m. Dec. 31-1 a.m. Jan. 1 (doors open at 8 p.m.)

• Where: Vogue Theatre, 6259 N. College Ave.

• Cost: $20-$80 online

If you don’t have kids — or can find a way to ditch them for the night — the Vogue Theatre has a New Year’s Eve celebration well suited for the 21-and-over crowd. The event features multiple DJs, a balloon drop and open bar, which is included with the $80 ticket.

New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball at the Tin Roof

• When: 6 p.m.-close Dec. 31-Jan. 1

• Where: Tin Roof, 36 S. Pennsylvania St.

• Cost: $75-$1,000 onlineĀ

If you’re looking to ring in the new decade in style, look no further than the Tin Roof. Grab a mask and enjoy live music from DJ VUE and The Armory, along with bottle service and a champagne toast at midnight.

Family Night Out

• When: 6-9 p.m. Dec. 31

• Where: Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington St.

• Cost: $16 for non-members, $10 for members, free for children under 3

The Indiana State Museum will host a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration with music, dancing, face painting, magic and a chance to explore the museum. There will be a balloon drop in the Great Hall at 8 p.m.

Epic New Year’s Eve Ball

• When: 9 p.m. Dec. 31- 1 a.m. Jan. 1

• Where: Epic Ultra Lounge, 8215 Center Run Drive

• Cost: $15-$20

Celebrate the new year with 98.3 DJ DayDay at Epic Ultra Lounge. With a midnight confetti blast and a free champagne toast — plus free parking — this is one of the more cost-effective ways to close out the year.
