Recorder Women’s Auxiliary holds annual Christmas event

More by this author

The Recorder Women’s Auxiliary will continue its tradition of celebrating the holidays by giving back to the community.

The group’s annual Christmas event will be 6-10 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Marott Apartments. Tickets are $50 and formal attire is encouraged.

The holiday event will feature a dinner, raffles and a style show. The Groove Theory will play live music, and there will be a silent auction with donated items that in the past included things such as jewelry, clothing, carriage rides and paintings.

Proceeds generated from the event will go to a scholarship fund for minority high school seniors going to college. Over the last 10 years, the Recorder Women’s Auxiliary has given a minimum of $5,000 in scholarships each year, according to Virginia Mason, who has been involved with the Auxiliary for about a decade and became president of the group in 2011.

“I firmly believe we need to keep the money in Marion County, in Center Township, instead of the suburbs,” Mason said.

Scholarships are $500 each. Criteria include having “a good moral ability,” as well as academic achievements and community involvement, according to Mason.

The Recorder Women’s Auxiliary has been in the business of raising and donating money to the needy since its founding in the early 1950s, when the group helped the poor, primarily during the holiday season. The Recorder Women’s Auxiliary has continued in that spirit by adopting a family in need for the holidays.

Along with continuing to help families during the holidays and raising money for scholarships, the Recorder Women’s Auxiliary provides food and clothing to needy in the community and encourages unity among women. The group, which has an annual membership drive in March, also supports organizations such as the Dayspring Center and the Crispus Attucks Museum.
