CareGivers, Inc., Home Health Care Services will offer free functional vision screenings for seniors throughout the month of May. The screenings are held in celebration of The National Eye Institute’s Healthy Vision Month. CareGivers Inc., offers a specialty program, Low Vision, which is dedicated to keeping seniors affected by vision loss healthy and independent in their homes. Through the Low Vision program, seniors with
compromised vision can receive individualized, home-based training on vision specific strategies for improved daily living.
Individuals with age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and homonymous hemianopsia may benefit from these screenings. These common vision complications affect nearly one out of six people 65 and older and cannot be fully corrected by ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment or surgery.
“According to Prevent Blindness Indiana,” said Claudia Chavis, CareGivers President, “Over 96,000 Hoosiers age 40 or older are currently legally blind or visually impaired. We believe our Low Vision program will give seniors the resources to enhance their quality of living while adjusting to their vision changes.”
Low Vision screenings will be offered as follows:
May 13: 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Indianapolis Housing Agency Senior/Disabled Apartments – Lugar Towers Community Room
May 20: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Senior Expo at The Gathering Place Community Church of Greenwood
