Indy Do Day encourages neighborhood impact

More by this author

Even as Hoosiers debate tax increases for crime prevention and preschool programs, there are other, non-monetary ways residents can make a positive community impact. There is now a chance to participate in one of the cityā€™s largest service events through Indy Do Day.

During Oct. 2-4, Indianapolis residents are encouraged to interact with their neighbors, take action through community service and create an unbreakable bond between community members during this people-powered day of service referred to as Indy Do Day.

Companies are joining the effort as well. For example, Buckingham Companies is working with Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership to help new homeowners transition into their new residences. Individuals and small groups are creating their own projects or joining businesses to assist in their everyday needs.

Below is a list and brief description of some of the area volunteer opportunities available at Indydoday.org.

Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation

This project is part of an effort to revitalize the playground located at 2925 N. Park Ave. Volunteers will paint playground equipment and clear out debris.

Service project ideas

Not sure where to start? Feel pressured about tackling a large project? No need to worry. Your volunteer project can be as big or as small as youā€™d like. Hereā€™s a list of suggestions to get you started on your path to community impact:

  • Litter cleanup
  • Home improvement (painting, landscaping, etc.)
  • Organize a food pantry
  • Tutor children
  • Organize an event
  • Serve food at a soup kitchen
  • Help someone redecorate their home

Share your service

Although Indy Do Day spans over a few days, the purpose of the event is to make every day a day of service in the community through creating a closer community. Many say they donā€™t have time to volunteer, but Indy Do Day gives Hoosiers a variety of options when it comes to donating their time and skills.

Volunteers are encouraged to continue their service and share their experiences on social media through photos, videos and testimonies. Projects can be shared on the Indy Do Day Facebook page or on Twitter. Remember to use the hashtag #IndyDoDay.
