New Riley tower first class

When your child is sick or injured, precious few things matter. You want access to expert medical care – preferably close to home. You want your child in a comfortable setting. And as a parent or caregiver, you want your voice heard and considered in the healing process.

Sounds simple enough – but as a parent of four and an executive in the ever-evolving world of children’s health care, I can tell you it is not. That is why we worked hard to transform the hospital experience for Hoosier children and their families.

The result of that effort stands 10-stories tall in the form of the new Riley Hospital for Children Simon Family Tower at Indiana University Health. With 675,000 square feet of new space, the building gives us much needed room to better evaluate and treat all children who come to our door – from across Indiana and beyond. So be assured, when you need us we’ll be there, ready to partner with you in the best interest of your child. After all, who knows your child better than you?

When the first phase of the Simon Family Tower opened on Jan. 27, patients and their families discovered an inviting space designed uniquely for their care and comfort. That’s because the Simon Family Tower functions as a home away from home. New patient rooms are all private, and generally bigger than our current ones. Each room includes family-centered amenities with a dedicated family area for rest and relaxation. Gone are the days when a child’s hospital stay meant families had to compromise their privacy or comfort.

Hospitals can be intimidating and confusing, especially for children and their worried families. But we designed the Simon Family Tower with simplicity in mind. Each inpatient floor in the new building is identical in design and grouped according to specialty, making it easier to navigate.

What’s more, the look and feel for the Simon Family Tower is a direct reflection of our patients, families, physicians and staff. From the beginning of this project, we turned to them to help us determine the optimal design of the new space. The result? “The World Around Riley,” an ecosystem-themed space, aimed at providing a much-needed journey and escape from the anxiety that accompanies illness. Throughout the building, patients and families journey through tropical rainforests, beaches, oceans, forests and mountains – each with colors, textures, furniture and art to match.

For more than 85 years, Riley Hospital has been a place of hope and healing. But now, thanks to our Simon Family Tower, we are able to offer Hoosier children and their families an extraordinary experience. On behalf of our skilled and dedicated physicians, staff and volunteers, I’d like to thank you for entrusting the care of your child to us. It’s a job we love and one we never take for granted.

Fink is president and chief executive officer of Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.
