The Local Host Committee of the National Baptist Convention’s Congress of Christian Education will have a kick-off celebration for the congress that will be in Indianapolis June 20-24.

The kick-off event will be March 18 at 7 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 1301 N. Goodlet Ave., where Ronald Covington Sr. is pastor.

More than 50,000 people are expected to come to the congress in Indianapolis. It will be held in the Indiana Convention Center.

Julius Scruggs, national president of the National Baptist Convention, USA Inc., will be the featured preacher for the kickoff.

Scruggs, author of four books including Meditations on the Church, God Is Faithful and How to Study and Teach the Bible, has been the senior pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., since 1977.

In addition to Rev. Covington, the host committee chairpersons are Jeffrey Johnson, pastor of Eastern Star Church, and Roland Woods, pastor of Mount Sinai Baptist Church.

During the week-long conference in June, participants will be educated, equipped and empowered by some of the best theologians from across the country and learn biblical truths, creative ideas and practical solutions to dilemmas that confront our world.

In addition to numerous Christian education classes being taught, other featured events will include an exciting worship service and musical, a children’s and youth rally and addresses from the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education President George W. Waddles and Dean Elliott Cuff.
