The Community Health Network Foundation has named Derek B. Groves, as its next president and CEO, the organization announced April 20.
Groves will assume the role May 18 as part of a planned leadership transition, succeeding longtime leader Joyce Irwin, who is set to retire July 3 after nearly 14 years.
Groves currently serves as interim president of the University of Toledo and UT Medical Center Foundation, where he has overseen philanthropic strategy, governance and organizational alignment during a transitional period.
He brings more than 15 years of experience in nonprofit and health system leadership, with a focus on growing philanthropic support for mission-driven organizations. His background includes leading major and principal giving programs, grateful patient fundraising and systemwide campaigns across healthcare and academic institutions.
“Derek brings deep experience in healthcare philanthropy and a strong understanding of how charitable investment can support patient care, workforce development, and community health,” said Patrick McGill, president and CEO of Community Health Network. “He is well positioned to build on the strong foundation Joyce has established.”

Groves holds a doctorate in organizational leadership and a master’s degree in organizational management, with research focused on leadership’s impact on organizational culture, performance and employee engagement.
Irwin will remain in her role through July 3 to assist with the transition.
The announcement was made publicly during Giving Gig on April 18, the foundation’s annual fundraising event, which raised a record $2.4 million to support cancer patients facing financial hardship.
