The IMAX theatre in the Indiana State Museum is offering Hoosiers the chance to watch never-before-seen films in IMAX this summer through their A24 and IMAX Indy Presents film series.

The IMAX x A24 film series, a partnership combining the big screen and the independent, indie producers, provides a unique opportunity for the fan-favorite A24 films to be seen on Indiana’s largest movie screen.

“We have been lucky enough to participate (in the film series),” said Neale Johantgen, IMAX theatre manager. “These are films you don’t typically see in IMAX.”

June saw two showings of the psychological thriller “Midsommar,” a colorful film that highlighted A24’s artsy style. IMAX is set to play the following A24 movies to continue the series:

  • July 16: “Oasis: Supersonic”
  • August 27: “Everything Everywhere All at Once”

“I think our presentation quality lends itself very well to more independent films,” Johantgen said. “It’s just a very cool way to see these films.”

In addition to the artsier, niche films displayed by the A24 film series, IMAX will also be continuing their first full year of the Classic Film Series.

“The whole goal (of the Classic Film Series) was to highlight the films that deserved to be seen on the giant screen,” Johantgen said. “Some are true classic films, but we also have new, recent classics.”

The films announced for the remainder of the year are:

  • July 9: “Wizard of Oz” (1939), presented in IMAX Digital Format, and the 85th anniversary of the original release.
  • August 13: “Pacific Rim” (2013), presented in IMAX Digital Format, and our viewer’s choice Classics Film Vote runner-up.
  • September 17: “The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone” (2020).
  • October 29: “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006).
  • November 5: “V for Vendetta” (2005).
  • December 17: “The Thing” (1982).

As Johantgen described, the process of choosing the films is not only about popularity, but about providing a variety of showings that appeal to all filmgoers.

“We kind of run the gambit of genres, decades and subject matter,” Johantgen said. “We look for films that really need to be seen on the larger screen.”
