A major renovation that will provide space for additional public computers, enlarged reading areas and improved accessibility will begin in early July at the Shelby Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, 2502 Shelby St.
Funded by a $393,787 philanthropic grant, the renovations will allow the Shelby Branch to meet an increased demand for computer access and to better serve patrons in other areas of the branch. While the renovation project does not expand the 6,400-square-foot facility, which opened in 1965, it does include a number of components that will change the look and function of its interior.
A separate computer lab will be housed in what is now the library’s community room, consisting of 21 computers for public use, compared to 13 now available in the main room of the branch. A remodeled children’s area will include a storytelling space and four new early learner computers. The project also will feature new family and adult reading areas, new restrooms to meet current accessibility standards, a new check out and information desk and improved energy efficiency. In addition, a remodeled staff workroom will help improve staff efficiency.
Throughout the construction process, scheduled to begin on July 11 with completion by Nov. 1, basic library services will be provided in a temporary building near the Shelby Branch parking lot, and current hours of service will be maintained. Patrons will continue to be able to return materials, place and pick-up holds and sign-up for the library’s 2011 Summer Reading Program. Computer access for Shelby Branch patrons will be provided at the nearby Fountain Square Branch, 1066 Virginia Ave.
The Shelby Branch renovation project will serve as the catalyst for future public education opportunities for energy and resource conservation as part of the concept, “The Green Library in the Park.” Located adjacent to the Garfield Park Conservatory, the library could become the ideal setting for project partners to showcase products, processes and components on new ways to conserve energy and natural resources.
