Gen Con, the largest and longest-running tabletop gaming convention in North America, is set to expand its educational arm with the Game Design Academy this year.
The program, developed in partnership with Ferris State University, will explore tabletop game design in-depth, equipping participants with industry knowledge and professional insights.
Since its inception in 1968, Gen Con has evolved from a small gathering of gaming aficionados to a premier event attracting thousands of attendees each year to Indianapolis.
The academy, scheduled to debut on July 30, runs alongside Gen Con’s annual Trade Day and continues through the convention, which takes place from July 31 to Aug. 3 in Indianapolis.
The Game Design Certificate program offers a structured learning experience led by industry experts and academic professionals.
Andrew Peterson, a lead program developer and adjunct professor at Ferris State University, provided insight into the academy.
“We’re combining the creativity and community associated with Gen Con with the structure and rigor that characterize an academic learning experience,” Peterson said. “This certificate bridges the gap between game design as a hobby and a viable professional career.”
The program focuses on practical learning, game-based education and design methodologies, offering students a chance to engage directly with experienced game designers and industry leaders.
The curriculum will not only emphasize hands-on learning but will also provide an opportunity for participants to earn academic credit equivalence.
An articulation agreement with Ferris State University ensures that the certificate can serve as a recognized credential for those looking to further their education or pursue careers in the gaming industry.
The convention is known for its diverse programming, ranging from game demos and tournaments to panel discussions and networking events. The addition of the academy strengthens its role as a hub for professional development in the tabletop gaming industry.
With limited spaces available, early registration is encouraged. Prospective participants can secure their spot for the Gen Con game design academy starting Feb. 9.
