Award-winning playwright Jessica Huang will be the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s (IRT) next James Still Playwright-in-Residence.
Huang was hired onto the IRT Artistic Team and will serve a three-year tenure with a focus on new play production, as well as leading the Young Playwrights in Process program and representing the IRT at festivals across the U.S. A play commissioned from Huang will also be developed during her residency.
“It is with great joy that we welcome Jessica Huang to the IRT as our next Playwright-in-Residence,” Benjamin Hanna, Margot Lacy Eccles artistic director, said in a statement. “Jessica’s writing is haunting, soul-stirring and absolutely gorgeous. Her voice is wholly unique, and we are thrilled to share her groundbreaking and exciting work with our audiences.”
Huang, a playwright and librettist, is also a Venturous Playwright Fellow at the Playwrights’ Center, a MacDowell Fellow, Hermitage Fellow and four-time Playwrights’ Center fellow. Huang’s work includes “The Paper Dreams of Harry Chin,” which received an Indiana premier at the IRT in 2022, “Mother of Exiles,” “Blended 和 (Harmony): The Kim Loo Sisters” (with composer Jacinth Greywoode) and “Transmissions in Advance of the Second Great Dying.”
“I’m so proud and excited to call IRT home for the next few years! I’m a midwestern girl, and the combination of IRT’s personal, human care and celebration of the joy and impact of theater have created the kind of artistic community that feels just like home to me,” Huang said in a statement. “I’m overjoyed that I get to dream into the future with Benjamin Hanna, whose vision and leadership I so admire, and to follow in the footsteps of the incredible James Still, whose artistry and generosity are an inspiration.”
