The African American Coalition of Indianapolis (AACI), in conjunction with the Indianapolis Recorder and Radio One, will host the first broadcast and live stream of a mayoral debate centered around Black issues featuring Democratic incumbent Mayor of Indianapolis Joe Hogsett and Republican contender Jefferson Shreve. The broadcast is Sunday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m.

AACI is a non-partisan alliance of African American civic, social, professional, service and community organizations whose goal is to educate and engage African Americans in the local, state and national political process.

“We are pleased to provide a platform for the mayoral candidates to discuss how the candidates plan to work with the Black community on the most pressing issues in our city,” said Marshawn Wolley, policy director and co-chair of the AACI Debate Committee. “It is imperative that our city’s top leader is not only aware of the issues facing the Black community but also has concrete plans to address them head-on.”

The Indianapolis Recorder is partnering to bring issues affecting the Black community to the forefront.

ā€œI believe that the upcoming mayoral election in Indianapolis carries immense significance for the Black community,ā€ said Robert Shegog, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper. ā€œIt represents an opportunity for our voices to be heard and our concerns to be addressed, ultimately shaping the future of our city.ā€

Oseye Boyd of the Indiana Local News Initiative and Cameron Riddle of Radio One will moderate the debate.

Regional Vice President of Radio One Deon Levingston expressed his eagerness for the upcoming debate.

“The Indianapolis stations of Radio One are excited to partner with the African American Coalition of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Recorder to highlight and voice the thoughts and concerns of our community during this mayoral election,” Levingston said.

AACI is accepting questions from the community for this debate. Questions can be submitted to Marshawn Wolley here.

The mayoral debate will stream on the Indianapolis Recorder’s Facebook page here and YouTube page here. Radio One stations 106.7 WTLC-FM, AM 1310/95.1 FM/92.7 FM WTLC-AM will also broadcast the debate.
