Indiana Landmarks is offering $10,000 in scholarships to the next generation of Black preservation leaders.
Indiana Landmarks’ new scholarship opportunity is funded by the Black Heritage Preservation Program and will award two $10,000 scholarships to Black Indiana students attending or planning to attend an accredited college or university, according to a press release. Graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate students and postgraduate students are all welcome to apply before the May 2 deadline.
“Indiana is full of untold stories of Black heritage, and we see the scholarship and internships as key to helping develop the next generation to tell the stories and preserve the heritage,” Eunice Trotter, director of Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Preservation Program, said in a statement.
The Black Heritage Preservation Program supports initiatives to recognize local Black heritage by identifying locations and buildings that should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and “seeking to expand the definition of those eligible for designation to include places where little or no physical evidence remains,” according to a press release.
Preferences will be given to applicants in or pursuing the following majors: history, public history, African/African American studies, archaeology/anthropology, preservation, conservation, city planning, landscape architecture and journalism.

Once awarded, the scholarships will cover education-related expenses for the 2025-26 school year.
Additionally, the Black Heritage Preservation Program is offering two full-time paid internship positions for summer 2025. The internship is open to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate students and post-graduates dedicated to pursuing preservation careers. Once selected, interns will be paid $22.50/hour per 37.5-hour work week for 11 weeks. Internship applications are also open through May 2.
