Dance Kaleidoscope is ringing in the new year with a new performance.

“Nothing is forever, darling,” which includes works by artistic director Joshua Blake Carter and their newest rehearsal director, Sean Aaron Carmon, includes exciting and emotional works set to the music of Rufus Wainwright, Iron & Wine, Quincy Jones, John Adams and more. Dance Kaleidoscope’s “Nothing is forever, darling” runs Jan. 17-19, 2025, at Schrott Center for the Arts.

Act I of the show opens with one of Carter’s works set to Rufus Wainwright’s “hauntingly beautiful” music. The coming-of-age piece aims to reflect the “bittersweet journey of self-discovery in a big city,” according to a press release.

“Inspired by Joshua’s own experiences, it tells the story of a young man whose world expands with new people, places and possibilities — only to find himself growing apart from a once-deep love,” Jay Hemphill, director of community engagement, said in a statement. “As Wainwright once said, ‘Nothing is forever, darling,’ a sentiment this dance brings to life with raw emotion and elegance.”

The show continues with Carmon’s “fever dream,” taking audiences on an emotional journey to explore vulnerability, before diving into a high-energy contemporary piece with Carter’s “Take A Gambol.” Blending nostalgia, sass and style, the company of Dance Kaleidoscope will take to the stage in heels for the first time, elevating the 1960’s era of “crooners, cocktails, and unstoppable style.”

Act II of the performance will mark the world premiere of Carter’s “Shaker Loops,” which is set to celebrated composer John Adams’ 1978 score. Inspired by the “shaking” of strings as they oscillate between notes, the score inspired Carter to craft a piece where “dance becomes music in motion.”

“Nothing is forever, darling” takes place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17-18 and 2 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com. For more information, visit dancekal.org.
