The Phoenix Theatre is getting a new partner for its annual back-to-school art celebration.

The Simon Youth Foundation (SYF) is a national nonprofit dedicated to helping students reach graduation day, and they are teaming up with the Phoenix Theatre to spotlight the creativity and talent of SYF students in an exhibition opening Aug. 2.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Phoenix Theatre to showcase the remarkable talents of our students,” Andrea Neely, president and CEO of SYF, said in a statement. “Often, the voices and stories of our students are overlooked. This exhibit provides a platform for them to be seen and heard.”

The exhibit kicks off from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 2 at the Michael O’Brien Gallery at Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre and aims to be a place where SYF students can celebrate their artistic achievements in preparation for the new school year.

Artwork from alumni and current students of the former Simon Youth Academy at Circle Centre Mall — which has now merged with Simon Youth Graduation Academy at Indianapolis Public Schools — will be on display in addition to photography curated under the guidance of the academy’s photography teacher Ron Hanson.

Select pieces will be available for purchase.

Representatives from SYF and The Phoenix Theatre will speak at the opening of the exhibit, which will be open to the public for a month.

“The Phoenix Theatre is committed to providing a space where diverse voices can be heard and celebrated,” William Powell, CEO of Phoenix Theatre Cultural Centre, said in a statement. “We are honored to collaborate with SYF to give these talented students the opportunity to share their art with the community.”
