On Nov. 17, 2024, All Things MOMMIE, Inc., led by CEO Erien Dickens, will host its fourth annual MomsGiving — a unique event created for mothers, stepmothers, bonus moms and mother figures to come together for an evening of connection, self-care and community. MomsGiving is more than just an event; it is a celebration of motherhood in all its forms, providing a supportive space for women to relax, recharge and find solidarity with others.

For Dickens, creating such an inclusive experience is not just a professional mission; it’s a personal passion.

As a Black female entrepreneur and mother, Dickens deeply understands the unique struggles that many mothers face, particularly the disparities experienced by women compared to men in areas like pay equity, work-life balance and access to leadership roles. While these challenges impact all women, they can be more pronounced for minority women, especially considering that Black women have one of the highest labor force participation rates among women in the United States, at 62.2%.

“Supporting mothers at every stage of motherhood is crucial,” she said. “We need to recognize the diverse needs of all moms — whether they are stepmoms, bonus moms or other mother figures — and ensure they have access to the resources, emotional support and community they deserve. Women, in general, face persistent disparities compared to men in the workforce, especially around pay and advancement opportunities. Minority mothers, in particular, often face additional barriers and may not get the recognition or support they need to balance motherhood alongside entrepreneurship, full-time jobs and community leadership. That’s why spaces like MomsGiving are so important.”

MomsGiving offers an inclusive, welcoming environment where all women can come together, share their experiences and support one another, regardless of background. It serves as a reminder that every mother’s journey is unique, and all moms deserve the resources, recognition and opportunities to thrive both personally and professionally.

Women in business

As more women climb the corporate ladder, across the country, we’re also seeing a boom in the creation of women entrepreneurs across the country.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, from 2002 to 2012, the number of businesses owned by Black women grew by a staggering 178.1%. This represents a significant rise in entrepreneurship among Black women, reflecting their growing presence in business despite systemic challenges.

Yet, despite their contributions, Black women have some of the lowest earnings among women in the U.S. The median earnings for Black women in full-time, year-round work were $34,000, compared to $53,000 for white men. That disparity persists outside of entrepreneurship impacting the Central Indiana business community and women in all spaces of our community.
